WhatsApp File Size Limit in 2026: 2 GB, But Your Photos Still Get Crushed
WhatsApp's file size limit is 2 GB. That's the sentence every article leaves you with. And technically it's true. Meta announced the 2 GB bump back in May 2022.

The 2 GB cap is the same across iOS, Android, WhatsApp Web, and WhatsApp Desktop. As long as you're on a recent version. Older clients still enforce the pre-2022 limit of 100 MB, so if your file refuses to send, check whether the app is up to date on both ends.
The WhatsApp Business API is different. That's the API businesses use for chatbots and automated messaging. It caps documents at 100 MB, video at 16 MB, images at 5 MB, and audio at 16 MB. If you're sending through the regular WhatsApp Business app on your phone, you still get the 2 GB consumer limit. The lower caps only apply to API integrations.

Videos get similar treatment. A 4K clip is transcoded down to 720p at a lower bitrate. Audio is re-encoded to Opus. It all serves the same goal Meta has had since day one. Keep media small enough to transfer quickly on slow mobile networks in every country WhatsApp operates in.
HD mode helps a little. Document mode helps a lot.
In December 2023, WhatsApp introduced HD mode for photos and videos. Tap the HD button at the top of the media preview before sending, and the compression is lighter. Larger output, sharper detail, a higher video bitrate.
HD mode is better than standard. It's not the original. There's still a resize step and still a re-encode.
